"SKELETONS FOUND"

UNEARTHED NEAR SURREY ROAD

MAY BE OF NEOLITHIC MINING PERIOD

"Two complete human skeletons and four skulls were unearthed yesterday a few feet from the high road over the Hog's Back, the famous Surrey viewpoint. They were lying in a curious formation and in the vicinity were the remains of some very rough flint cutlery instruments and some small shells.

The first skeleton discovered was lying with its head towards the south and was a depth of 2ft. 6in. Six inches lower the second skeleton was found with its head to the west. One skeleton was lying on its face, with the right arm folded across its chest and the left arm by its side. The other was lying on its back.

IN CHALK RUBBLE

The thigh bones are very large and appear to be those of powerfully built men. Although flints were found no pottery or metal has yet been unearthed. Major A G WADE, the archaeologist is of the opinion that the skeletons are of the Neolithic mining period. They were buried in Chalk rubble, the result of a mineshaft having been filled in. He said that he thought the skeletons may be those of miners who might have been killed in the operations. Before any definite date could be given the opinion of the Royal College of Surgeons would have to be obtained. "
