Generally I have used to hold
a) Spouse's name e.g. JOHN SMITH .
b) If single and of age to marry, then SINGLE is record.
c) If married but spouse not shown on census MARRIED.
d) If Widow or Widower then WIDOW
e) If on board boat then name of the e.g. HMS HEARTY
f) If NOT son/daughter/wife of Head of Household, but related, then relationship e.g. NEPHEW [to] JOHN SMITH [head of household]
