"At Guildford yesterday the advowson of the vicarage of St. Bartholomew, Wanborough, Surrey, was put up to auction, together with the manor house of Wanborough, dated 1527. The house was formerly tenanted by Sir Algernon West, private secretary to Mr. Gladstone, and was once visited by Queen Victoria, who planted a tree in the grounds. The church, which has an interesting local history, is said to have been built in the reign of William the Conqueror. Although there was a large attendance no offers were received, and the property was withdrawn."
